Torsion Spring

A torsion spring is a type of spring designed to withstand torque (torsional force). Its primary function is to rotate around its central axis, thereby storing and releasing angular energy (rotational force). When an external force attempts to rotate it, the spring exerts a counteracting torque, trying to return to its initial position.

How It Works:
A torsion spring is typically mounted on a central shaft. When an external force (torque) is applied to its arms (or legs), causing it to rotate around the axis, the spring undergoes angular displacement (twisting), absorbing and storing energy (potential energy). Once this external force is removed or reduced, the spring releases the stored energy and, due to its material elasticity, generates a reverse torque, returning to its original angle and position.

Key Features:
Shape: Most are cylindrical helical forms, but other special shapes also exist.
Coils: In the free state (unloaded), the coils can be either closed or spaced, depending on the design
End Configurations: To apply and transmit torque, the ends are usually shaped into various types of arms, such as straight arms, hinged arms, or short bent arms. This is the most noticeable visual difference compared to compression and extension springs.
