Tension Spring

A tension spring, also commonly known as an extension spring, is a type of helical spring designed to resist axial tensile forces. Its primary function is to operate under tension; when pulled apart from both ends, it exerts a counteracting force attempting to return to its original length.

How They Work:
In their free (unloaded) state, the coils of a tension spring are typically wound tightly together with no space between them. When an external force stretches the spring from both ends, it elongates and absorbs and stores energy (potential energy). Once the stretching force is removed or reduced, the spring releases this stored energy and uses its elasticity to return to its initial closed length, generating a retracting pull force.

Key Features:
Shape: Usually cylindrical.
Coils: Coils are closed and touching each other when the spring is at rest.
End Configurations: To facilitate the application of a pulling force, the ends are almost always fashioned into loops or hooks (e.g., full loop, half-loop, English loop, side hooks).
